What is Nutrition Counseling?
Sometimes it’s not enough to know what needs to be done; you need to know how to do it. Nutrition Counseling is a collaborative process. Counselor and Client work together to develop solutions that will work in daily life. I bring the expertise in human nutrition and the experience helping others achieve their goals to the conversation. You bring your knowledge of what has and hasn’t worked for you. Together, we combine this knowledge into concrete plans to move you toward your goals.
The solutions to nutritional issues are found at the intersection of evidenced based dietary advice and your own personal needs and experiences. Science looks at what works from a statistical standpoint, which is very valuable. It helps us chose the dietary changes that are most likely to benefit you. However, not everyone fits the statistics, so it’s critical to be able to make changes based upon the needs of the individual.
I currently provide Nutrition Counseling in the state of Washington, via secure video conferencing or telephone. My areas of specialty include wellness and healthy eating, weight loss and food allergy, intolerance and sensititivity, and I have years of experience working with a variety of nutrition needs. A study published in the April 2014 issue of The Journal of Preventive Medicine demonstrated the effectiveness of web-based nutrition counseling in helping people lose weight, improve their diets, and reduce blood pressure and cardiovascular disease risk. Video conferencing also helps reduce the amount of time you have to commit to meeting, removing a common barrier to seeking the advice of a Dietitian/Nutritionist.
Different goals require different plans. A simple review of your diet to see what can be done to improve your eating habits can be completed in a single visit. A follow-up visit is a helpful way to check in and make sure that the changes we decide on are working. For weight loss, an initial visit and a series of follow-ups is best. A phone discussion is often the best way to determine what your goals are and how we can work together to meet them.

Privacy and Confidentiality
Making sure your private information remains private is important. I use technology designed to maintain the privacy and confidentiality of our discussions. Video conferences are hosted by a service that is HIPAA compliant and documents are delivered via secure methods.
I also offer consultations based on the ThinnerGene DNA test and personalized weight management program. . With a simple mouth swab, ThinnerGene looks for variations that can help you choose the most effective dietary and lifestyle changes to help you achieve and maintain a healthy weight. ThinnerGene tests for variations that affect how your body metabolizes fats, carbohydrates and proteins, and how responsive your weight may be to exercise. Equipped with this information, we can add another layer of personalization to your counseling session and weight loss program. Here are a couple of examples of the genetic variations that ThinnerGene tests for
- PPARG- Variation in this gene can impact how people store and metabolize fats¹. Depending on your variation, you may benefit from a diet higher in monounsaturated fatty acids, or you may need to consider an overall low fat diet².
- FTO – Variations in this gene are related to how your body responds to physical activity, and provide insight into how critical exercise is for you to lose or maintain weight³.
